Sustainability in Porto

Sustainability

Prepare for the future

At Meet Porto we start with a fundamental concept: the sustainable destination. To achieve it, we looked at what the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) was saying, and at the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

National bureau Turismo de Portugal also published its plan for a sustainable sector. We believe in a need for transformational change, only attainable by a compromise in achieving social, economic and environmentally sustainable development.

In our industry, we can work on sustainability on a day-to-day basis, introducing gender equality or green activities, just to name a few.

Sustainable
Activities

The Porto and North region´s Peneda Gerês National Park is a natural paradise, filled with sustainable activities. Hiking, cycling and canyoning are just a few, with a lush green landscape as a backdrop. To end the day on a perfect note, dive in one of Gerês’ waterfalls.

Harvesting grapes for wine making is on the menu in Douro’s offer of sustainable activities, among others.

Alvão park, located a mere 1h30 from Porto is a rocky scenario, with high falling waterfalls, perfect for a hike. South of Porto is another hiker’s paradise: Arouca Geopark, with its many trails, also attracts rafting afficionados, in a completely diverse landscape.

Environment
Protection

Portugal also ranks high in environmental protection, with a large number of treaties signed and stands out in energy efficiency. As for Porto, it signed the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, strengthening the city’s position and efforts in energy transition and climate neutrality. The city has implemented several measures to tackle climate change and promote the use of green power sources, along with energy saving strategies.

The sustainable management of water resources and construction is also a priority in the city. Events held in Porto can expect, with all this, to have less of a harmful footprint in the environment and promote social and economic equality.
