29th National Congress of Internal Medicine

Client: Portuguese Society of Internal Medicine
Date: 4-7 May 2023

Venue: Alfândega do Porto Congress Centre

Organisation: São João University Hospital Centre - Medicine Service
Preparation: 8 months

The event's theme was “Bridges for the Future”, in analogy with the bridges that symbolise the city of Porto.

The 29th edition of the National Congress of Internal Medicine - the largest and most important annual scientific meeting regarding Internal Medicine - aimed to discuss and establish bridges between the past and the future and between Internal Medicine and the various medical specialties, particularly General and Family Medicine and others that arose from Internal Medicine.

The event brought together around 2800 participants and used nearly the entire Alfândega do Porto Congress Center, with the exception of the west wing.

With a strong participation of national and international speakers of high clinical and scientific merit, the congress focused on sharing innovative practices based on the most recent scientific evidence, providing unique opportunities to foster knowledge, networking and the exchange of diverse experiences. The organisation wanted to promote privileged and collaborative contact between all fundamental partners in the practice and modernisation of healthcare (health professionals, pharmaceutical and equipment industries and technology applied in healthcare, etc).

The first congress that our team produced for the Portuguese Society of Internal Medicine was in 2011. This was followed by those in 2017, 2020 and the most recent one, in 2023. Alfândega do Porto Congress Center’s choice for the venue came from the event's organising committee itself. The choice was made not only because of the location - the client did not want to leave Porto - but also since it is the only venue in the city capable of hosting an event of this size.

In this edition of the event, our team always worked in coordination with 3 members of the organising committee. The congress lasted for four days and during that time 90 members of our staff were present permanently, with people from all areas, including catering, audiovisual and hostesses.

The event management met all the organisation's needs, including social programs, travel and accommodation for participants, development of a mobile application and liaising with all suppliers. The best sustainable practices are always taken into account by our team at all events. All trips were made by bus and boat.

The event's agenda included parallel sessions, happening almost always simultaneously, in several rooms of the venue. The event’s plenary sessions were streamed.

The event also featured an exhibition area with around 30 exhibitors from the pharmaceutical industry.

Regarding social programs, there were 3 dinners: the first was at the T&C restaurant, at WOW; the second was at the S. Bento da Vitória Monastery; and the last, the congress dinner, for 800 people, took place in the Alfândega do Porto Congress Centre Archive Hall. Watch behind the scenes of this dinner here:

‘Porto de Honra’ (a welcome drink with Port Wine) on the first day, featured a performance by a saxophonist and the closing dinner with a concert by a local band, Os Azeitonas. Watch the main moments of this surprise concert here:

Our team was entirely in charge of the creative concept. The different bridges in Porto - which set the tone for the conference theme - were taken into consideration in the design pieces produced.

Our work, in the client's own words

Jorge Almeida, President of the Organising Committee of the 29th National Congress of Internal Medicine

About the team
The team ensured that the ideas we had were viable, they were able to put them into practice and even expand them. And this is what happened. It was a partnership. It was quite positive.
The graphics were absolutely exceptional.
Pedro has a great capacity for improvisation, and he can make things happen. I told Pedro: "we need a boat". And he said, "I'll find one." And the boat appeared. Things started to appear.
The President's Dinner was very well organised. It was perfect. People were really happy.

About the venue
The size of Alfândega do Porto Congress Centre and its connection to the North region are all key elements for holding a remarkable congress. It is a historic building, representative of the city and its people.

About the destination Porto
Porto has a good offer of public transportation and infrastructure (hotels) that allow events to be held in the city. And there's something that others don't have – the people. Also, the city has a reasonably priced cultural offer.
