SCIENCE AND CENTRES OF KNOWLEDGE

Learning

Porto has long been a hub of knowledge, education, universities and high value activities, like engineering.

A symbol of that is the Centre of Engineering and Product Development (CeiiA), in Matosinhos, a cutting edge facility, that designs, develops and operates innovative products in industries like automotive and urban mobility, aeronautics, ocean and space. Hundreds of engineers work on projects for some of the biggest companies in the world at CeiiA, boosting Porto’s metropolitan area reputation.

Prestigious
Universities

Porto houses some of the most prestigious universities in the country, including in mathematics and engineering. The number of university students in Porto has been increasing, and reached a new record level in the last academic year.

University of Porto. The University of Porto alone has 48 R&D Units, and almost 3000 integrated researchers with a PhD. They are dedicated to different fields of knowledge, from Health to Sports, Agro and Biotechnology, from Mobility to Computer Engineering and Space Sciences.

Health Cluster. Research in health is another knowledge cluster gaining traction in the city. The Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto has been working for decades in cancer prevention and management of cancer patients, with a pool of researchers from all over the world.

Education. According to the latest figures, the city's workforce is highly educated, with 32% of residents holding a higher education degree.

Educated
Population

This workforce is well prepared to face the challenges of today’s economy and knowledge ecosystem: it is flexible, multicultural, speaks several languages and is committed to the best work in these complex fields.

This academic environment has been attracting foreign companies to the city, and these companies have invested in their own knowledge centres. A good example is the Danish wind power expert Vestas, that chose Porto, in a group of almost 100 cities, to settle its new centre of engineering.

But there are countless examples, like Xing, Critical Techworks or Natixis. Among Portuguese companies that are based here, Farfetch or Blip are some of the standouts.
